Keel Crossing opening celebrations

Sunderland’s Keel Crossing permanently opened to the public on Saturday, 18 October, marking a proud new chapter in the city’s transformation. As thousands of Sunderland AFC fans made their way to the Stadium of Light, the striking new footbridge came alive with colour, movement, and community spirit.

Residents and visitors alike crossed the Wear on foot and by bike, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Keel Square’s pre-match festivities and the fan parade that swept across the bridge. Framed by the historic Wearmouth Bridge, Keel Crossing now stands as a bold symbol of connection- linking neighbourhoods, communities, and the city’s future with every step.
