Imagining Riverside

Imagining Riverside Sunderland

There’s still time for Sunderland residents to help shape ambitious plans for a new urban quarter in the heart of the city.

Riverside Sunderland will regenerate land on both sides of the River Wear, creating 1,000 new homes, 1 million sq. ft of office space, public buildings and cultural attractions.

Sunderland City Council are asking people who live or work in the city to share their views on upcoming plans by dropping in to an event at The Beam this week.

The recent Let’s Talk Sunderland campaign showed that residents want a better city centre experience, including improved shopping and leisure offerings and a more attractive environment. The four-day Imagining Riverside Sunderland event will give the people of Sunderland the chance to hear about plans for the city centre and discuss their ideas in more detail.

Sunderland City Council leader Cllr Graeme Miller said: “The ongoing development of Riverside Sunderland will help to unlock the city’s untapped potential and take Sunderland much closer to our vision of a connected, international city with better opportunities for everyone.

“We already have some outstanding architects and designers working on the Riverside Sunderland plan, but we want to work with communities to ensure that Riverside Sunderland reflects the needs and aspirations of all our citizens.”

Imagining Riverside Sunderland will be held at The Beam, the new office building at St Mary’s Boulevard, between Wednesday 12 February and Saturday 15 February.

Opening times will be as follows:

Wednesday 12 February, 5pm-7pm

Thursday 13 February, 10am-1pm; 2pm – 5pm; 6pm – 7.30pm

Friday 14 February, 10am – 1pm, 2pm-5pm

Saturday 15 February, 10.30am-4.30pm drop-in session with presentation at 12noon and 2.30pm

The event will include talks and presentations by members of the design team and will give people the opportunity to have their say, visit the site and share their ideas.

These events are open for members of the public to drop in at any time, or you can register in advance at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/imagining-riverside-sunderland-registration-89233625175
